His interest in geology led to identification of the first quadruped fossil footprints to be found in Britain. He presented a paper to the Royal Society in Edinburgh on the discovery of the footprints at Corncockle Quarry, near Lochmaben. A small sample of these footprints is exhibited at the museum.
